The end of Winter??

Summer Hours:
Tuesday - Friday: 10am-5pm
Saturday: 10am-2pm
Sunday-Monday: Closed

Well, the weather's still not convinced, but we've made an executive decision... winter IS over!

Whilst this is great news for Beach Addicts, Wool Addicts will be disappointed to learn that it means the start of Wool Addiction's summer hours. So, sadly, no more Sunday opening for a few months.

But, fear not, we're still open from 10am til 2pm on Saturdays, and nothing's changed at all mid-week, when we're here from 10am til 5pm to keep your knitting projects ticking along.

There's still plenty going on:
And 0f course the webshop is still open 24/7 - perfect for midnight snacks :-)

Knit One Save One

A better reason than ever to knit tension squares!

Save the Children have just launched their Knit One Save One campaign as part of their Survive to Five program. Their target is to collect 80,000 knitted squares to make 5,000 blankets for children in Australia, Cambodia and India.
every year 8.8 million children around the world die before their fifth birthday
Here at Wool Addiction we've realised that our enthusiasm for the humble tension square (or gauge swatch for our foreign friends!) can be combined with our equal enthusiasm for helping others through knitting...

...why not knit all our tension squares to 20cm x 20cm so that we can donate them all to Save the Children!

Now we're pretty pleased with ourselves for coming up with this brilliant idea, so we've scheduled another of our popular Tension Squares Workshops for next Saturday, 31 October. We'll collect up any 20cm tension squares that you don't want to take home at the end of the workshop, and pass them on to Save the Children for you.

One of the nice things about the Knit One Save One campaign is that you can use whatever colour, design and ply you like, as long as the square ends up 20cm x 20cm. That makes it a great way to experiment with new stitches, stripes, fairisle or aran designs! Or how about knitting on the diagonal, or in the round?

We're thinking of running another Cable Knitting Workshop, where we could also collect up 20cm squares, so let us know if you're interested.

One thing that the Save the Children campaign does ask is that you use wool rather than acrylic, because of its fire-retardant properties. This sounds like the perfect job for Loyal - a machine-washable, 8-ply, 100% wool yarn which is available in lots of bright colours and only costs $5 per ball.

What's with this weather??

Tulip Time is over, and we're left wondering whether Spring was ever here at all...

In the past few weeks we've had a wild run with the weather: heat-waves, cold snaps, dust-storms, thunder-storms, hail and hurricane-force winds. It's a wonder the poor tulips survived at all, but they stood up boldly to everything Mother Nature had to throw at them, and managed to last until the end of the Tulip Time Festival.

I have finally finished my Tulip Time spring-water sling, so if you love tulips, why not download the pattern, and carry your own tulips wherever you go!

I've designed the pattern so that you can sling a 600ml spring-water bottle over your shoulder, but in this strange weather you might want to adapt it to carry a small thermos flask instead... :-)

It's Tulip Time in Bowral!

Tulip Time Festival 2009
24th September - 7th October
9am - 4pm

Wool Addiction is only a three-minute walk from the Grand Floral Display in Corbett Gardens, the centrepiece of Tulip Time.

So, if you're coming to Bowral to see the flowers, why not visit us too?

Or, conversely, if you're coming to see us, don't forget to go and have a look at the tulips!

To mark the event, I've been working on a brand new tulip-inspired pattern download for the website. Unfortunately, I've hit a spot of "designer's block", so it's not finished yet, but I'll publish it as soon as it's ready. So, watch this space...

Hopefully I'll have it done before the Great Bulb Dig-Up on 7th November!

Ready for something new?

It's time to learn or perfect some new techniques!

Winter is over, and the pressure to provide warm clothing for our loved ones is over... for now!

So, why not take advantage of the breathing space to learn some new (or brush up some forgotten) knitting techniques?

With this thought in mind, we've started scheduling our new season of workshops. We have a couple of old favourites: Tension Squares, and Finishing Techniques, and we're excited to announce our brand new Cable Knitting Workshop!

We'll take you on an Aran Adventure, using The Great American Aran Afghan as our guide-book. A copy of the book is included in the cost of the workshop, so you can keep exploring when you get home, or come back to Wool Addiction and join us for the next leg of the journey...
Dates:
Tension Squares - Thursday 24th September
Finishing Techniques - Thursday 1st October
Cable Knitting - Friday 2nd October
Wild Knitting with Loani Prior - Thursday 8th & Friday 9th October
Just in case you can't get to Bowral, we've whipped up a new pattern, the Overhand Hat, to get you thinking about the Magic Loop. Now don't be daunted: the Magic Loop is cumbersome to describe, but once you've got it, you'll think "This is so obvious! Wasn't I doing this all along??"

If you're interested in finding out what other knitters think of this pattern, you can find it on Ravelry!

As ever, if you have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, comments or requests for patterns, workshops or products, please drop us a line ...

Spring has sprung!

Spring Opening Hours
Tuesday - Friday 10am - 5pm
Saturday 10am - 4pm
Sunday 10am - 2pm
~~~~
Webshop open 24/7!!
The weather is warming up, and it's time to switch to our Spring opening hours.
We only planned to open on Sundays during the Winter, but we've met so many lovely new people who just can't get to Bowral during the week that we've decided to carry on. We'll close at 2pm, which gives you plenty of time to shop, and then retire to a cafe for the afternoon!
Saturday Social Knitting
If you'd like to come and knit in good company and air-conditioned comfort this Spring, why not join our new Saturday Social Knitting Group? There's no need to register or book, just turn up on a Saturday from 11am with your knitting, and $5 for tea, coffee and biccies!
If you have any thoughts, question or suggestions you'd like to share, please drop us a line.
Another one bites the dust...
I can't believe another month has slipped by, and I've only managed one blog post!
So, you might ask, what on earth have I been up to?
Well, knitting mostly (see photo), but also adding more new products to the Wool Addiction online shop:
So, what does the future hold? Well, our HUGE new range of gorgeous KnitPro Symfonie needles, for a start! We have finally succumbed to temptation, and filled the shop with:
  • Fixed Circulars (2mm - 3mm)
  • Interchangeable Circulars (60cm - 150cm cables, and 3mm - 12mm tips)
  • Double Points
  • Straights (2mm - 12mm, all in 3 lengths: 25cm, 30cm, 35cm)
  • sets - Deluxe Interchangeable Circular sets, Interchangeable Circular Starter sets, and Straights sets (in a gorgeous black damask case)
If you're wondering what all the fuss is about, why not treat yourself to an Interchangeable Circular cable, and a set of tips, and give them a test-run? They're flying out the door quicker than I can add them to the webshop, but I hope to get them all online this week.
We're also planning more classes and workshops: definitely another Tension Squares Workshop, and what about a Cables and Arans Class? If you have any ideas for workshops you'd like us to run, please email us, we'd love to hear from you!
The wait is over...
At last, the moment you've all been waiting for...
Loani Prior's Wild Knitting Workshop is open for bookings!
wild knitting
Learn to knit outside the square in two days with Loani Prior
  • Thursday 8th October and Friday 9th October 2009
  • Wool Addiction, 6 Bundaroo St, Bowral
Loani uses the iconic tea cosy to demonstrate the wild and sculptural possibilities of knitting.
Knit your own tea cosy and learn tricks and techniques to help you think outside the square.
If you can knit a stitch and purl a stitch and cast on and cast off, you can join this class. If you consider yourself to be an advanced knitter and would like to learn more knitting skills, this might also be the class for you. Either way it will be a lot of fun.
Loani says she can feel a third life coming on. Her usual ‘Filing Fairy’ job is fast giving way to a ‘Knitting Fairy’ job. This year, the Queen of the Tea Cosies has given workshops at the Nundle Woollen Mill, at the Sturt Winter School in Mittagong and a number of other wool shops around the country. Loani’s book, Wild Tea Cosies, has meant that what was once a private, in front of the tele sort of activity has all of a sudden become very public. Her new book REALLY Wild Tea Cosies is due for release in March 2010.
Please bring with you the following:
  • Small 3-cup teapot. Small round Chinese teapots are perfect our purpose.
  • 2 x 6mm circular needles 60 cm length from tip to tip
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle
  • 1 x 4mm crochet hook
You can choose all the wool you need for purchase in the shop after meeting and discussing your design with Loani.
Feel-good knitting
...or...
How $5 spent on your knitting habit can help a child in need
Knitting for charity is a fantastic idea, but wouldn't it be good if you could knit for yourself and still be doing your bit for sick children?
Well, here at Wool Addiction we've come up with not one, but TWO ways you can help someone else whilst indulging in your favourite hobby, for as little as $5...
  1. Download Frankie Brown's Ten Stitch Twist Blanket pattern for $5
  2. Buy Naturally Loyal 100% wool for only $5 per ball
Frankie Brown's Ten Stitch Twist is a stunning spiral rug worked in Noro Kureyon (or any other yarn of your choice). As this delightfully different design works out from the centre, there's no need to decide on the size before you start - just add a ball at a time until it's big enough, or you're too dizzy to go on!
Neither Frankie nor Wool Addiction are making any money from this design - all proceeds are donated to Frankie's chosen charity, the Children's Liver Disease Foundation. We are charging $5 per download, which we are paying to the charity in $100 blocks in advance of each 20 sales, but if you love the pattern please feel free to make a further donation yourself on Frankie's Fundraising Page.
Loyal from Naturally Yarns in New Zealand is a DK/8-ply machine-washable 100% wool yarn, which is available in a wide range of bright colours. At only $5 per ball, it's an easy choice for whipping up quick winter woollies!
Naturally Yarns are donating 5c per ball to the Child Cancer Foundation of NZ and the Children's Cancer Institute Australia.
If you're feeling extremely charitable, you could even knit a Ten Stitch Twist Blanket in a rainbow of Loyal colours ... !!
Let them eat cake!
All Wool Addiction Workshops include
a
delicious selection of pastries
for morning tea
Apparently I haven't made this clear up until now, and, for obvious reasons, that needs to be rectified!
Now, our next two Workshops could be considered to be at the less-than-funky end of the knitting scale, and perhaps pastries are what's needed to entice you to attend. Buuut, when you think about it, Tension Squares and Finishing Techniques really are the keys to starting and ending your project right, and surely the perfect finished product is all the incentive you need?
Knitting is fun, of course it is, but what a huge investment of time and money we all make! And sometimes things don't turn out quite as we'd hoped, do they?
If your problem is a baby dress that she'll grow into by kindy, or a fantastic stash that you just can't find the right pattern for... then the Tension Squares Workshop is for you!
If (like me) you're always looking for patterns to knit in the round, so that you don't have to sew anything up... then we'll see you at the Finishing Techniques Workshop.
And, if you really, really like pastries... we'll see you at both!
Or, if you're stuck on something in between the Tension Square and the Finishing, then perhaps a Private Lesson is what you need? Maybe you're confused by cables, or tense about intarsia? Well, for the next few weeks, Jill is available between 11am and 12pm on Wednesdays to offer hands-on help with your current knitting challenge. Just pop along to our online shop to book your slot, and jot a few lines in the Comments section to let us know what you need help with...
Workshops run from 10am til 1pm, and cost $65
Sunday 31 May - Tension Squares Workshop
Sunday 7 June - Finishing Techniques Workshop
Private Lessons run from 11am til 12pm, and cost $50
Wednesday 27 May
Wednesday 3 June
Wednesday 10 June
Workshops and Private Lessons are all held in the Knitting Room at Wool Addiction in Bowral, NSW, and can all be booked online at www.wooladdiction.com.au/shop
Room for two more...
There are only two places left in the Sock Workshop
this Sunday, 24th May!
If you're keen to join us for this fun workshop, why not jump onto the online shop to book your place right now? It's easy to book online, and don't forget that Bowral is only an hour and a half from the centre of Sydney.
The Sock Workshop is a great chance to learn about knitting in the round on double-point needles, which is really useful skill for making garments that require little or no sewing up. Socks are a great example of this: as soon as you knit the last stitch, they're ready to wear. And slipping a freshly-knitted sock hot off the needle straight onto your foot is a great incentive to start work on its partner!
We've also scheduled a Tension Squares Workshop for Sunday, 31st May 2009. Come along and spend a few hours unravelling the mysteries of the tension square with us. We'll explore what changes when you use different needles, different yarn, and even different fibres. You'll leave this workshop armed with inspiration to go forth and experiment!
Book Workshops online!
Book your place on a Wool Addiction workshop online!
Wool Addiction workshops are held in the Knitting Room of our shop in Bowral, NSW. They are friendly, relaxed classes, with a limited number of participants to make sure everyone gets enough attention.
We are starting the Winter 2009 schedule with our popular Sock Knitting Workshop. We'll help you to knit a small child's sock, so that you can learn all the techniques you need to warm the feet of your entire family! This is a great introduction to knitting in the round, on double point needles.
The cost of the Workshop is $65, which doesn't include materials, in case you want to BYO. Alternatively you can buy what you need online when you book, or in-store before the class commences.
The Sock Workshop will be held on Sunday 24th May from 10am til 1pm, but you're welcome to carry on knitting til we close at 4pm!
The full schedule of classes and workshop can be found on our website. You can even click a button to add it to your own Google Calendar, so you'll always have the latest information at your fingertips.
Keep your eye on the blog for details of our upcoming Tension Squares Workshop...
Pastries and discounts for Mothers Day!
It's not too late to treat your Mum for Mothers Day!
Sunday, 10th May 2009
Wool Addiction are offering not one, but two Mothers Day treats this year: a 15% discount in our online shop, and free coffee and pastries in our "real" shop.
Of course, it's too late for an order to be delivered by Sunday, but here's a thought ... why not order online, then bring your Mum along to the shop on Sunday for coffee and pastries, and her present will be ready, wrapped and waiting for her!
How's that for a perfect day out?
Not only will you save 15% by using the 'MUM' discount code, but by choosing 'Store Pickup' you'll also save yourself the cost of postage, so you can spend even more on Mum.
It's easy to use the online discount: just choose the items you want to buy, then enter the discount coupon code 'MUM' at checkout. You can use the coupon for anything in the shop - yarn, needles, patterns, books - as long as the total is $50 or over.
If you intend to collect your order in person, don't forget to select the 'Store Pickup' option, which will remove the postage costs.
Saturday, May 2, 2009
Mum's the word...
It's our guess that you either
ARE a Mum,
HAVE a Mum
or KNOW a Mum...
...so we'd be delighted if you'd come and celebrate Mother's Day with us on Sunday 10th May 2009!
If you're in NSW, why not bring your Mum (or someone else's Mum) along to Bowral, and join us at Wool Addiction between 10am and 4pm for coffee, tea and cake? As we're Mums too, we'll be treating ourselves to lovely pastries from the famous Gumnut Patisserie, and we'd be delighted to share them with you...
But don't worry, if you're shopping online you won't miss out - just spend $50 or more between now and Mother's Day, and we'll give you an instant 15% discount! All you have to do is enter the discount code MUM at checkout, and your total will magically be reduced.
So now you can buy your Mum 15% more than you were going too :-)
As usual, we've added plenty of goodies to the webshop this week, including Anny Blatt pattern books, KnitPicks Harmony Straights needles, and Namaste bags, as well as two new free pattern downloads: the Striped Garter Baby Blanket, and Harry's Library Bag.
The Small Print: The online discount code can only be used once per customer, for a single order of $50 or more, so make sure you order everything you want at the same time!
